Facebook Orders Stephen Curry Docu-Series, Sets BuzzFeed News’ Live Trivia Game Launch

By Todd Spangler

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – Facebook keeps plowing more money into original programming for Watch: The company ordered a six-part docu-series on NBA superstar Stephen Curry and set a Feb. 20 premiere date for BuzzFeed News’ interactive trivia game show “Outside Your Bubble.”

“Stephen vs. The Game,” following Curry — three-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors — throughout the 2018-19 season on and off the court. The series will premiere later this spring exclusively on Watch, the social giant’s episodic video platform.

The series promises a “deeply personal” look at Curry, including never-before-seen footage from the hoopster’s childhood and behind-the-scenes video from his 2018 NBA championship run. “Stephen vs. The Game” is executive produced by Unanimous Media (Curry’s production shingle) and Religion of Sports and directed by Gotham Chopra. It’s the second installment in Religion of Sports’ “VS” series, after “Tom vs Time,”  which ran in 2018 and followed Tom Brady’s quest to win another NFL title with the New England Patriots.

“This past year has been an incredible chapter in my life — from the birth of my first son to winning a third championship — and we’ve been capturing it all,” Curry said in a statement about the Facebook Watch series. “I have incredible fans, and I’m excited to share my life with them in a way I never really have before.”

Curry has 8.2 million followers on Facebook and 23.9 million on Instagram. In addition to the docu-series, Curry will interact with fans in his official Facebook Group, provide real-time updates via Facebook and Instagram Live broadcasts, and use Instagram Stories and IGTV to share bonus content from the series. Separately, is gearing up for next week’s launch of “Outside Your Bubble,”  powered by Facebook’s interactive game-show platform , hosted at facebook.com/OYB . The live trivia show — which promises cash prizes to both in-studio contestants and audience members — is the latest move into the genre inspired by the popularity of HQ Trivia. Facebook last year launched its own live trivia game show, “Confetti,” which bestows cash prizes.

BuzzFeed’s “Outside Your Bubble” was an experimental concept that originated in early 2017 as an attempt to show readers what’s happening outside their own social-media cocoon. The game show challenges contestants to reach across the cultural divide to guess what their opponents on the other side are thinking.

The show will be hosted by Brian Tong, an online, TV and radio host, creator and podcaster who is one of the hosts for WarnerMedia’s DC Universe. “Outside Your Bubble” features a dynamic jackpot that can fluctuate throughout the show, depending on decisions that are made by the studio contestants.

Richard Brown serves as showrunner and executive producer of “Outside Your Bubble,” along with BuzzFeed News head of programming Cindy Vanegas-Gesuale and VP of news and programming Shani Hilton.
