Crazy Facts About ABBA That You Need to Know

Rolling right through the ’70s and into the ’80s, ABBA defined an era of music. If you’re 40 or over, there’s a good chance you have a few memories of them.

This band left behind several classics, including “Honey, Honey” and “Waterloo,” and while you might think you have a good understanding of the history behind this band, chances are you don’t.

1. ABBA Concert Fans Were in the Millions

ABBA was famous, and by famous, we mean knock-your-socks-off famous. In 1977 alone, a mind-boggling 3.5 million people tried to score tickets for their London tour dates.

Given the opportunity, this band could have sold out its venue more than a couple of hundred times over. Too bad there wasn’t enough room and time to accommodate everyone’s ticket requests.

2. Eurovision Propelled ABBA to Success

Even though the United States and Australia both didn’t pay much mind to Eurovision, looking back, it is easy to see that winning the contest in 1974 propelled ABBA toward success.

In fact, their first album rang loud with the international crowd way before Eurovision actually became a household name, but it was thanks to the winning of this contest that ABBA became so successful, so fast.

3. Who Needs Money When You Have Oil Commodities

Thanks to ABBA’s popularity among the Soviet states, they made quite a bit of money from this part of the globe.

But due to a certain embargo limiting payments behind the Iron Curtain, it wasn’t possible to be paid in rubles. Instead, the band accepted payments in the form of royalties from oil commodities owned by the Soviet Union.

4. Abba is also the name of a seafood company in Sweden

The band  had to negotiate rights to the name ABBA with  a canned herring giant :”Abba Seafood company”

5. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! will drop on July 20, 2018

 The new musical will  featured the songs “Angel Eyes,” “I Wonder,” and “When I Kissed the Teacher”.

Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski and Dominic Cooper all have roles.

Cher, the pop legend,  appears as the mother of Meryl’s character Donna.

6. Abba announce first new songs for 35 years

The ABBA has revealed that the band has recorded two new songs set for release later this year, 18 months after announcing a 2019 virtual reality tour.
