Top Trends From the 2020 Grammys Red Carpet

By Brooke Jaffe

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – The Grammys red carpet kicked off on a somber note after the news of Kobe Bryant’s death so the music world remembered the basketball legend while still celebrating artists. Alicia Keys, host of the 62nd Grammy Awards, set an emotional mood by reminding the audience that “music is a universal language that is meant to unify audiences in peace and love, and that is the spirit of our show.” Although there was an undeniable sadness in the air, the red carpet managed to deliver some new ideas to consider from a fashion perspective.

Western influences were a major undercurrent of the evening. Lil Nas X’s infectious hit single, “Old Town Road,” felt like one of the anthems to Sunday’s show, celebrating the art of musical collaboration.

There was a heavy focus on the details, from accessories to beauty moments. Hats, such as Billy Porter’s kinetic show-stopper, emerged as one of the key fashion punctuation points of the night. Nails were also a favorite place to make a statement, from Billie Eilish, to Lizzo and Rosalia’s bejewel manicures.
